Did
You Know?... Kos was inhabited from the very
early Bronze Age (2900-2100 BC) as the prehistoric tombs
and the findings in Asklupi and in the White Stone cave
prove.
Roman
Odeum: Built in the 3rd. century A.D. and was
excavated in 1929. It is in quite good condition, with
eighteen marble steps. The construction of this Amphitheater
was based on vaulted arcades. Inside these Arcades some
ancient statues were discovered, including the one of
Hypocrites, which is displayed in the museum.
Hippocrates
Platanos: This historic tree which is considered
by many as the oldest tree in Europe, stands in front
of the entrance to the Knights Castle. It’s trunk
has a circumference of approximately twelve meters,
and according to tradition it was under this very tree
that Hippocrates taught medicine to his students. Next
to the Platanos, there is an ancient Sarcophagus, which
during the Turkish occupation was used as a water trough
for the nearby Mosque.
Castle
Of The Knights: Standing on the right side of
the harbour, is this most impressive monument of the
Venetian period. Built by the Knights of St. John in
the 15th century. It consists of an inner and outer
wall, and is in quite good condition. It shows an interesting
example of the defensive architecture in 15th century.
Kept within the Castle are many artifacts from ancient
temples.
Boat
Trips: Excursion boats leave the harbour daily
with trips to Pserimos and Nisyros very popular. Visit
Bodrum, Turkey, on a hydrofoil (20mins) or ferry (50mins).
History:
In the north eastern part of Kos town, near the
harbour lies the Ancient Town. There one can see the
ruins of a Hellenistic Temple dedicated to Hercules,
restored pillars of a small Temple and remains of a
sanctuary, dedicated to Aphrodite.
Beaches:
Liminonas has two fairly secluded beaches, one being
in the shape of a horse shoe, and the waves roll in
and knock you down. If you like to be away from the
crowds you should visit Liminonas.
Kos
Town: A lunatic mix of beach resort, open air
nightclub and ancient ruins that spreads in all directions
inland from the enclosed port. Greek and Roman remains,
including elegant columns and beautiful street mosaics,
are incongruously pitted against music thumping street
bars and a nightmare of neon at night.
Did
You Know?... Hippocrates was born around 460
BC on the island of Kos, Greece. He became known as
the founder of medicine and was regarded as the greatest
physician of his time. He based his medical practice
on observations and on the study of the human body.
Platani:
Inland from Kos town is the village of PLATANI,
the last refuge for the island's dwindling Turkish community.
In the 1960s there were around 3,000 Turks here but
as the enmity between the two countries has grown so
the population has declined to a few hundreds. This
is still the place for a Turkish night out at one of
the many restaurants, all of which are superior to any
in Kos town.
Did You Know?...
Flat plains have made cycling uniquely popular and there
are around 5,000 cycles on hire at the height of the
season.
